Interested in human rights, civic involvement and international studies? Here's an excellent opportunity to work with one of the world's leading civil society alliances. The CIVICUS Civic Space Research Internship 2026 is a paid internship (100% remotely) for young graduates interested in the field of political science, international relations and in research on human rights.

The internship provides a chance to join the international effort of monitoring civic space around the world, to support the People Power Under Attack Report and to learn from and work with experienced researchers from other parts of the world. Interns that are selected will work remotely for six months, receive a monthly stipend of USD 1,200 and be supervised by the Civic Space Research Lead.

About CIVICUS Civic Space Research Internship 2026

One of the CIVICUS' signature internship programmes that supports the CIVICUS Monitor's work and contributes to the annual report People Power Under Attack.

The chosen candidates will conduct a research on Civic Space issues, document the evolution of Human Rights, analyse the events impacting civil society and have a tight collaboration with international researchers and partners throughout the internship experience.

The internship not only provides exposure to policy research from around the world, but also allows interns to work remotely 100% with no time limits.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicant's qualification should be as follows:

  • Language of Application: All country nationals can apply

  • Has at least a Bachelor's Degree in:

    • Political Science

    • International Relations

    • Human Rights

    • A suitable substitute for this topic should be used if it doesn't apply to the situation.

  • Proven track record in relation to conducting human rights research

  • Awareness of different international human rights instruments and bodies.

  • Understanding of the aspects of freedom of religion or belief

  • Experience in coaching teachers in English communication.Training experience in English communication experience.

  • In addition, having a second UN language is an asset.

Research Intern Responsibilities

Interns will:

  • Provide information and encourage studies related to civil rights and the civic space

  • Report on Civic Space incidents and track them

  • To capture and track incidents with CIVICUS Monitor incident tracking system.

  • Organize research datasets

  • Assist in preparing the report, entitled People Power Under Attack

  • Work with international research partners

  • List meetings and admin

  • support to communication, learning and sharing work


Required Skills

The candidate(s) have/have a demonstrated ability to:

  • Skills in locating and evaluating research materials and analysing research in problem solving and in answering research questions

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Documents concerning world affairs of which he was interested are included.

  • Self-motivation to work independent, remotely

  • Strong communication skills

  • Good organizational skills
