Transport Shut Across Lahore and Islamabad Amid Religious Rally | Latest Pakistan News

ISLAMABAD (Latest News Today): Authorities in Pakistan have imposed strict transport restrictions, road closures, and internet suspensions in Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi following a major religious rally announced by a religious group. The move aims to maintain law and order and ensure public safety amid rising tensions.

Severe Traffic Disruptions in Major Cities

The ongoing protest rally preparations have caused massive traffic jams and public transport delays across Punjab.

  • The Lahore–Islamabad Motorway (M-2) and GT Road are partially blocked with shipping containers.
  • Entry points to Lahore, including Babu Sabu and Thokar Niaz Baig, have been sealed off.
  • Access to Islamabad via motorways is completely restricted, while the Chenab River Bridge in Gujrat has also been closed, limiting intercity travel.

These blockades have severely affected commuters, ambulance movement, and daily business operations, causing widespread inconvenience across central Punjab.

Public Transport and Orange Line Train Suspended

Public transport services are temporarily halted in several areas. The Orange Line Metro Train service in Lahore has been suspended as a precautionary measure.
Additionally, GT Road regions such as Muridke, Rabwah, and Gujrat are experiencing major traffic congestion due to road blockades.

Educational Institutions Closed Across Lahore

In response to the situation, the Government of Punjab has ordered early school closures at 11:00 AM.
The University of Punjab has canceled all scheduled examinations for the day, announcing that new dates will be shared later.
Students are advised to stay updated through official university notifications.

Section 144 Imposed in Punjab

To prevent potential unrest, the Punjab government has invoked Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code for 10 days, banning gatherings of four or more people in public spaces.
However, religious functions, weddings, and funerals are exempted from the ban.
Additionally, a complete ban on public display of weapons has been enforced under this directive.

Internet Services Suspended in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

The Ministry of Interior has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to suspend mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi until further notice.
This decision was implemented at midnight, with no fixed restoration timeline announced yet.
The internet suspension aims to curb misinformation and preserve national security during the religious rally.

Increased Security Measures and Aerial Surveillance

Law enforcement agencies are on high alert, with extra police deployment and aerial monitoring across Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi.
Authorities have warned that further restrictions may be imposed if the situation escalates.

Officials emphasize that public cooperation is crucial for maintaining peace and restoring normal life in affected areas.
