NIMA Seminar on World Environment Day – Ending Plastic Pollution

NIMA officials and respected guests celebrated "World Environment Day" on June 4, Wednesday. The seminar brought together experts to explore solutions to modern day environmental crises. The theme was "Ending Plastic Pollution," a crucial need of the modern world.

June 04, 2025 – NIMA Islamabad organized an international seminar to mark World Environment Day under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The event brought together experts, policymakers, and environmentalists to raise awareness and explore solutions to the growing problem of plastic pollution affecting the marine environment.

Lt. Gen Mohammad Afzal, as a Chief Guest, emphasized eradicating plastic pollution and urged actions through the “5Rs” approach. Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Advisor to the Prime Minister, highlighted Pakistan’s commitment through the National Plastic Action Plan. Both praised NIMA’s efforts.

A galaxy of prominent speakers shared their views, including Amb. Dr. Muhammad Nafeez Zakaria (ED COMSATS); Mr. Zulfiqar Younas and Mr. Naeem Ashraf Raja from MoCC&EC; Dr. Rabia Nousheen (Deputy Director, EPA Punjab); Ms. Prakriti Kashyap from SACEP Sri Lanka; Ms. Zainab Naeem from SDPI; Mr. Irfan Yousuf (Consultant, World Bank and CEO, MKAI Climate Consultancy); and Dr. Salma Hamza from Bahria University.

On the occasion, NIMA also commissioned its dedicated Centre, the Maritime Environment and Climate Change Centre (MEC3), which has the mandate to focus on research, policy, and awareness of ocean health and climate issues, including policy.

The event concluded with the signing of a MoU between NIMA and COMSATS, reinforcing their commitment to collaborative environmental research and innovation. President NIMA thanked participants and reaffirmed NIMA’s focus on rebuilding a resilient Blue Economy for Pakistan.
