Ask anyone, and they will tell you, with a mixture of disbelief and mild alarm, that the year has gone. That it was somehow January last week. That the summer evaporated before they had properly agreed to its arrival. That they have no clear account of where February went, or March, or the six Tuesdays that apparently constituted April. This is not nostalgia. This is not hype. The perception that time is accelerating is one of the most common experiences of modern life, documented across cultures, age groups, and geographies. It is also one of the most under-examined, because the cause is hiding in plain sight: we are no longer bored.
By 2026, almost no one with a working smartphone spends any real stretch of time in genuine blankness. Every gap has been filled. Every pause has been plugged. Every moment of potential stillness has been pre-empted by a notification, a scroll, a story, a clip, a thought that the device in the pocket generates before boredom can properly begin. And in eliminating boredom, we have eliminated the one psychological condition that makes time feel long—and in doing so, we have watched our lives accelerate past us at a pace that no previous generation had reason to fear.
To understand why distraction compresses time, one must first understand what time actually is from the inside. The philosophers have argued about this for two and a half millennia without reaching consensus, but on one point they are unanimous: time as we experience it bears almost no relationship to time as the clock measures it. Augustine of Hippo, writing in the fourth century, concluded that past and future do not exist—only the present moment does, and our experience of duration is entirely a construction of the mind’s memory and anticipation. “What is time?” he famously asked. “If no one asks me, I know. If I want to explain it to someone who asks, I do not know.”
That disarming honesty has survived fourteen centuries because it remains accurate. Time is not perceived; it is inferred. The brain, as neuroscientists now confirm, has no sensory organ for time—no equivalent of the eye for light or the ear for sound. There is no “time particle” arriving from the external world for the brain to detect. Instead, it constructs duration retrospectively from the density of experiences it can retrieve from memory. The richer the texture of what happened, the longer the period feels. The thinner the texture—the fewer the distinct, memorable events—the more compressed it seems when recalled.
Martin Heidegger, writing in the twentieth century, came at the same problem from a different angle. In Being and Time, he described boredom through the image of a person waiting for a train at a provincial station—no phone, no book, no companion, nothing but the weight of unoccupied minutes. What this person experiences, Heidegger argued, is not merely an inconvenience. It is a direct encounter with time as raw existence, with the fact of being here, in this moment, without any instrumental purpose to dissolve it into.
Boredom, in Heidegger’s reading, is time pressing itself upon consciousness—making its passage felt with an almost physical weight. It is uncomfortable precisely because it strips away the distractions that ordinarily prevent us from confronting the bare fact of temporal existence. When boredom is available, time is slow, present, and heavy. When boredom is abolished—when every gap is filled before it can be felt—time becomes weightless, and it moves without friction into the past.
The philosophical account has a precise neurological parallel. The brain constructs its sense of duration through what psychologists call the pacemaker-accumulator model: a mechanism that pulses at a certain rate while attention is directed toward time itself, with each pulse representing a unit of experienced duration. When a person is bored—when there is nothing engaging the mind—attention turns inward and toward the passage of time, the accumulator counts more pulses per objective minute, and the duration feels longer than it is. When a person is absorbed in something engaging—a conversation, a film, a problem being solved—attention is directed outward and away from time itself, the accumulator counts fewer pulses, and the duration is underestimated. This is the neurological mechanism beneath the observation that time flies when you are having fun and drags when you are not. It is also the mechanism beneath a more important and less-discussed observation: time flies when you are distracted, regardless of whether the distraction is fun.
A landmark study published in Cognition and Emotion in 2024, using virtual reality waiting rooms to manipulate the conditions of boredom, confirmed this relationship with experimental precision: higher boredom levels consistently produced slower subjective time passage. The participants who experienced genuine boredom—unrelieved by any stimulus—reported time moving at what felt like a crawl. Those who had even minor distractions available did not. The study’s authors noted that boredom was particularly linked to explicit awareness of the passage of time: the bored mind notices duration because it has nothing else to notice. The distracted mind does not notice duration because it is too busy noticing everything else, and duration is therefore lost. This is the pivot point of the entire argument. Distraction does not merely fill time. It erases the experience of its passing.
There is a further and deeper mechanism at work, one that explains not merely why distracted time feels fast in the moment but why it disappears almost entirely in retrospect. Human memory encodes time through the distinctiveness of experiences: we remember periods well when they were filled with novel, meaningful, and emotionally significant events that formed distinct memories, and we remember them poorly when they were characterised by repetitive, undifferentiated, low-salience activity.
Psychology Today’s coverage of the TIMED project, a major cross-cultural European study on digital technology and time experience, found that the more time people spent immersed in digital life, the faster their lives felt like they were moving. This was not because digital experiences are pleasant—though many are—but because they are undifferentiated. One hour of scrolling resembles every other hour of scrolling: the content changes, but the mode of engagement does not. The memory system, which encodes time through the texture of distinct experiences, files this sameness as very little. When the week is recalled on Friday evening, there is almost nothing to retrieve from the vast number of hours spent in digital consumption, because the memory system had nothing distinctive to encode.
The German neuroscientist Marc Wittmann, one of the TIMED project’s collaborators and one of the world’s leading researchers on subjective time, articulates this with precision that is worth quoting directly. “For our sense of time to slow, the hours need to be marked with meaning and memories—everything doomscrolling is not.” An hour of doomscrolling, or any other such continuous, passive digital consumption, doesn’t produce a “very creative or fulfilling” hour.
Nothing left.” Nothing stays. This phrase of two words is a diagnosis of the modern experience of time. The feed gives a constant sense of involvement that leaves almost no trace in memory, for involvement without distinctiveness cannot be encoded as anything the mind can retrieve and locate in time. The year fades away, not because nothing happened, but because everything that happened was the same shade of the same thing. The memory system cannot construct a timeline from sameness.
Boredom has an almost universally bad reputation. It is associated with laziness, with wasted time, with the failure to be productively engaged. The productivity literature treats it as a problem to be solved, a gap to be filled. Entire industries exist to ensure that boredom cannot persist for more than a few seconds: the autoplay function, the infinite scroll, the push notification, the podcast that begins before the previous one has quite finished. And yet boredom, examined carefully, turns out to be one of the most cognitively valuable states the mind can occupy.
A 2024 preprint by Wolff, Danckert, and colleagues argued that boredom functions as a self-regulatory signal: it arises when the mind has deviated from an optimal zone of engagement and prompts a search for something more meaningful. Boredom, in this framing, is not the opposite of productivity. It is the mind’s demand for a more significant use of its time. It is uncomfortable because significance is harder to achieve than distraction—and the discomfort is the point. The bored mind is being told, by its own restlessness, to do something that matters.
The philosopher’s case for boredom goes further. Bertrand Russell, in his 1930 essay “In Praise of Idleness,” argued that the capacity to tolerate boredom was a prerequisite for any kind of sustained creative or intellectual work. The person who cannot sit with emptiness cannot develop the inner life that original thought requires. A generation that has never been bored—that has had every gap pre-empted by a device—may be a generation without the cognitive architecture for the kind of long, slow, undirected thought that produces discovery.
A 2026 essay in The Conversation drawing on Heidegger argued that what digital platforms take away is more than attention: they “limit the deeper kind of reflection that allows us to engage with life and ourselves fully.” They make us lose the capacity to inhabit silence and confront the unfilled moment. When genuine emptiness arises, we fill it before we have had time to experience it. And in filling it, we prevent the kind of encounter with our own interiority that every serious human tradition—philosophical, religious, literary—has insisted is necessary for a life that is genuinely, rather than superficially, lived.
The logical case is the simplest. If time’s subjective length is produced by the density of distinct experiences, and if distraction reduces distinct experience to a thin, undifferentiated stream that the memory system cannot encode, then a life lived in continuous distraction will, in retrospect, seem short in a way that no single year was short. The long, boring childhood summers that adults remember as elastic and enormous were not longer because they were pleasant. They were longer because they were full of novel experiences, genuine boredom included, that the young brain was actively encoding as distinct and meaningful.
Ruth Ogden’s research at Liverpool John Moores University, which found that more than seventy-five percent of people report that Christmas seems to arrive earlier each year, captures this at the social scale. It is not that the calendar has changed. It is that the texture of the intervening year has thinned, leaving less for memory to reconstruct as duration. Each year leaves less behind, so each year seems, in retrospect, shorter than the last.
There is something worth mourning in this, and something worth doing about it. What is being lost is not merely the subjective sensation of time moving slowly. What is being lost is the experience of being present in one’s own life in a way that registers—that produces memories, that creates the sense of a biography with texture and weight and pace. A life recalled as a blur of undifferentiated scrolling is not a life that has been inhabited. It is a life that has been survived while looking elsewhere. The remedy is not complicated, though it requires something that the entire architecture of contemporary technology is designed to prevent: the willingness to be bored. To sit without the phone. To wait for the train in the actual silence of the station. To allow the unfilled moment to press itself upon consciousness with Heidegger’s full, uncomfortable weight.
This is not a counsel of Luddite withdrawal. It is a counsel of proportion. The distraction is real and often pleasurable; the world that smartphones open is genuinely large. But the human experience of time is not elastic in ways that accommodate unlimited distraction without cost. Every hour that leaves no memory is an hour that did not, from the mind’s perspective, exist. And the accumulation of unmemorable hours is, in the end, the accumulation of an unlived life. The year did not disappear.
You were distracted while it passed, and distraction, whatever else it gives you, always takes time in return. The research is unambiguous: the mind that attends to its own experience, that tolerates the discomfort of genuine presence, finds time slower, richer, and more retrievable in memory. The mind that outsources its attention to the feed finds the years vanishing at a pace that only increases. The difference is not a matter of technology. It is a matter of where, in the passage of your life, you have chosen to look.
