AIOU Expanding Educational Access Nationwide
Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) was established in May 1974 in Pakistan. AIOU was the second open university in the world and the first in Asia and Africa at that time. It is a public university that offers a hands-on learning experience with a wide variety of programmes and courses to approximately one million people without obstacles of space and locality. Technical and vocational training courses are also included in the scheme of programmes offered at the university. Currently, 1,027,000 students have been enrolled in AIOU, with 487,044 having graduated.
The main campus of AIOU is in Islamabad and there are a total of 54 regional offices throughout Pakistan including Kalat, Zhob, Dera Ghazi Khan, Dera Ismail Khan, Mithi, Rawalakot, Gilgit, Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Skardu, etc. Hence, it has been made accessible for students all over Pakistan to enroll and acquire education without any difficulty.
Aims and Objectives of Allama Iqbal Open University
Open universities are the institutes that provide the facility for distance education. The main objective of setting up AIOU was to provide education for all in Pakistan. The distance learning mode allowed students to continue their education in the comfort of their homes.
It was evident that people were reluctant to acquire education due to several reasons. Many cities do not have well-established universities and students lack the resources to travel and reside in bigger cities. Due to jobs or other responsibilities, the masses are unable to continue education. When it comes to females, many girls have to leave their studies incomplete because of family restrictions or societal constraints. Hence, AIOU presented an affordable platform for students’ academic cravings.
Accreditation and Academic Recognition
AIOU is accredited by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, meaning that it is recognized as an official institution for awarding degrees. Looking at the increasing competitiveness in the field of academics and the job market, it has become vital to focus on the accreditation of programmes from the concerned national departments.
The institute has worked to achieve accreditation for its agriculture programme from the Agriculture Council of Pakistan, and environmental design from the Pakistan Engineering Council. The accreditation process for community health and nutrition, computer programs, and education programs is ongoing from the appropriate councils.
Quality Education at an Affordable Cost
AIOU has provided an affordable platform for the population of Pakistan to acquire knowledge without any discrimination. People willing to learn can initiate their journey at any age regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, and financial condition. It is cheaper for students as compared to the other private universities which require tuition fees along with a separate budget for residence and commute.
AIOU is funded by the government and requires a minimum tuition fee, because of the open distance learning mode. It also assists its students with facilities of libraries and technology to carry out their academic activities.
Faculties
AIOU is composed of four distinguished faculties which have further departments as well as a Centre for Languages and Translation Studies (CeLTS). Each department offers multiple courses for Bachelor, Master, MPhil, PhD and other technical and vocational training programmes.
