On the 25th and 27th of August, Pakistan competed in the 2023 World Athletics Championships’ men’s javelin throw which was held at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest. Despite the competitive nature of sports, Pakistan was able to bag a silver medal in the sport, making the entire sports community applaud the winner, Arshad Nadeem. The 26-year-old athlete bagged the second position while India’s Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal. The much-celebrated sportsman, Arshad Nadeem, made his best throw at 87.82m in the third round.
This particular win led to the exploration of the player’s profile revealing how he has made other groundbreaking performances like in the South Asian Games in Kathmandu, Nepal. Another fact worth mentioning is that Arshad Nadeem remains the first Pakistan gold medalist in Commonwealth Games since 1962. When interviewed about his achievement, Arshad stated, “I was competing with myself, not with Neeraj Chopra.”
The player’s take on his win led to an appreciation from the winner, Chopra, who complimented the player on his sportsmanship. Hence the World Athletics Championships 2023 revealed how Pakistan, despite its socio-economic conditions or political turmoil, booms with talent when it comes to sports. Moreover, it also displayed how our sportsmen can display excellent character on international grounds, showcasing what can be called sports diplomacy.
